The course engages in the development of cutting-edge electronic devices, including high-performance smartphone cameras and next-generation display technologies. You will learn how the mechanisms inside a smartphone function, how virtual reality environments are created, and gain hands-on experience in designing and developing entirely new electronic devices.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"ellipsis\" id=\"ellipsis-83344518\">&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"rmwp-button-wrap\" id=\"rmwp-button-wrap-83344518\" style=\"display: none;\"><button name=\"read more\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"rmwpButtonAction( '83344518', 'See More', 'See Less' )\">See More<\/button><\/span><div class=\"rmwp-toggle \" id=\"rmwp-toggle-83344518\" style=\"display: none\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on what I have learned in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Course, I hope to continue my studies in graduate school and pursue more advanced research on electronic devices. I am particularly interested in liquid-crystal lenses, and through this research, I aspire to develop innovative products that do not yet exist in the world. I gained extensive experience ranging from simulating the alignment of liquid-crystal molecules to actually fabricating liquid-crystal lenses\u2014skills that span both software development and hands-on manufacturing. In the Kawamura Laboratory, I also learned the fundamentals of electronics, which greatly deepened my understanding of device design and fabrication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In graduate school, I presented my research twice at the Liquid Crystal Conference, and the opportunity to interact with researchers from across Japan became an invaluable asset. Through exposure to diverse research topics, I was able to rediscover both the challenges and the potential of my own work, which strengthened my motivation and commitment to research.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"ellipsis\" id=\"ellipsis-1467959382\">&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"rmwp-button-wrap\" id=\"rmwp-button-wrap-1467959382\" style=\"display: none;\"><button name=\"read more\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"rmwpButtonAction( '1467959382', 'See More', 'See Less' )\">See More<\/button><\/span><div class=\"rmwp-toggle \" id=\"rmwp-toggle-1467959382\" style=\"display: none\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am now assigned to the Production Planning Department, where I manage product quality, cost, and production processes. The abilities I cultivated at university\u2014such as data organization, analysis, and logical thinking\u2014are proving highly useful in my work. The knowledge and experience I gained through research have become a powerful foundation for my professional career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying in the Electronics Field of the Functional Device Physics Course in the Department of Environmental Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Akita University offers far more than simply acquiring knowledge. From tiny screws to large industrial machines, accurate dimensions are essential in manufacturing, and Mitutoyo\u2019s instruments play a vital role in ensuring that accuracy. Even the smartphone you use may contain parts made with the help of Mitutoyo\u2019s measurement tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liquid-crystal lenses can adjust focus by changing the refractive index of the lens region when voltage is applied. In my research, I focused on a component inside the lens called the \u201cdraw-out electrode\u201d in order to further improve lens performance. By carefully designing the shape and placement of this electrode, I explored lens structures that minimized defects.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"ellipsis\" id=\"ellipsis-628167725\">&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"rmwp-button-wrap\" id=\"rmwp-button-wrap-628167725\" style=\"display: none;\"><button name=\"read more\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"rmwpButtonAction( '628167725', 'See More', 'See Less' )\">See More<\/button><\/span><div class=\"rmwp-toggle \" id=\"rmwp-toggle-628167725\" style=\"display: none\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In graduate school, I conducted experiments based on this idea and collected a wide variety of data. I had many opportunities to present my research at academic conferences. Although I was very nervous at first and struggled to speak effectively, repeated experience greatly improved my presentation skills\u2014from preparing clear materials to communicating my ideas to an audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this research, I developed the ability to plan experiments, analyze data, and explain my ideas logically. However, when I first entered high school, I still had no clear vision of what I wanted to become, and unlike many of my classmates, I couldn\u2019t confidently talk about my future dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the exam season approached, I visited various universities during their open campuses. It was then that I learned that research in the field of functional materials contributes directly to the development of future products. This discovery motivated me to apply to a course at Akita University where I could study functional materials, and I entered through the AO (now Comprehensive Selection) examination.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"ellipsis\" id=\"ellipsis-1584259719\">&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"rmwp-button-wrap\" id=\"rmwp-button-wrap-1584259719\" style=\"display: none;\"><button name=\"read more\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"rmwpButtonAction( '1584259719', 'See More', 'See Less' )\">See More<\/button><\/span><div class=\"rmwp-toggle \" id=\"rmwp-toggle-1584259719\" style=\"display: none\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After enrollment, during my first through third years, I studied subjects such as electronic engineering and materials engineering, deepening my knowledge within the course. One major advantage of the AO entrance system, which I truly appreciate, is that your desired course assignment is decided at the time of admission. Students admitted through the general entrance examination join the department as a group and later choose a course, but some of my classmates were unable to enter their preferred course due to academic performance or capacity limits. In my case, my chosen path was secured from the start, allowing me to focus on lectures aligned with my interests without unnecessary pressure. As a result, I was able to perform well academically, and when it came time for fourth-year laboratory placement\u2014described below\u2014I was able to join the lab I had hoped for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer of my third year, I participated in an internship at a company in the field I had become interested in through my studies. Witnessing firsthand how functional materials support products that make life more convenient strengthened my ambition: \u201cI want to develop functional materials myself and deliver products I helped create to people around the world!\u201d This clarified my goals and solidified the direction I wanted to pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my fourth year, I joined a laboratory that researches functional-material thin films, just as I had hoped. There, I began research on new magnetic and dielectric materials with the potential to enable next-generation electronic devices\u2014such as ultra\u2013high-capacity memory essential for the growing IoT society, highly sensitive and high-output sensors, and stereoscopic display technologies that go beyond current VR goggles. Improving material properties or creating new functionalities can directly lead to higher-performance devices and entirely new technologies, ultimately making the world even more convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After advancing to graduate school, I continued this research. In the second year of my master\u2019s program, I was offered a position at a leading manufacturer that develops and produces electronic components for IoT-related products\u2014achieving the career path I had envisioned during my entrance exam days. In September, I also presented my research results at the Annual Meeting of the Magnetics Society of Japan. I truly feel that I enjoyed an exceptionally fulfilling university life. As I step into my career, I am determined to work hard to realize my dream of contributing to next-generation product development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Akita University offers a calm environment where you can dedicate yourself to study, research, and personal interests, and it provides a supportive atmosphere where asking questions and seeking help from faculty is easy. For students who already have a clear vision for the future\u2014as well as for students like my younger self, who are still searching\u2014Akita University is a place where new paths can open. During job hunting, I was occasionally asked about my admission method (which type of entrance exam I used), but I realized that what truly matters is what you learn and what you work hard at during your time at university. In fact, I received a job offer even from a company that asked this question. For those considering Comprehensive Selection or School Recommendation admissions, I encourage you not to worry about the admission route. Balancing these with the specialized subjects of the course is not easy. However, the challenges make the experience all the more rewarding, and through various activities in real educational settings, I strongly feel that I have grown as a person.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"ellipsis\" id=\"ellipsis-2101686547\">&#8230;<\/span><span class=\"rmwp-button-wrap\" id=\"rmwp-button-wrap-2101686547\" style=\"display: none;\"><button name=\"read more\" type=\"button\" onclick=\"rmwpButtonAction( '2101686547', 'See More', 'See Less' )\">See More<\/button><\/span><div class=\"rmwp-toggle \" id=\"rmwp-toggle-2101686547\" style=\"display: none\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the specialized courses, we study abstract mathematics and physics\u2014subjects that feel quite different from what we learn in high school. As the years progress, the content becomes more demanding, and there are many topics that cannot be understood immediately. Yet, studying with friends in the same course, discussing ideas, teaching one another, and thinking through problems together until everything makes sense is incredibly enjoyable. I am reading a book in English and also talk about it in English (others talk in Japanese). I am really motivated in this seminar because my seniors and friends in this course are highly motivated and they are enjoying math, and I am sure it makes me improve in Mathematics and English. In addition, our teachers give us some opportunities and support us if we ask them. It is a really good environment to study what you are interested in. always enjoyed reading books about scientists. Since childhood, whenever I had free time, I would go to the library and read about their lives. Scientists overcome tremendous difficulties in their pursuit of truth, and their passion always inspired me. In particular, Tabibito (The Traveller) by Hideki Yukawa had a strong influence on me and sparked my dream of studying in Japan.\u3000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mathematical Science Course at Akita University<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Mathematical Science Course, students study mathematics, physics, and computer science in an integrated manner. The course is also characterized by its small class size, which allows professors to give individualized study advice tailored to each student. However, thanks to the professors, that anxiety disappeared. For example, after one Linear Algebra lecture, the instructor said to me, \u201cIf you have any questions, please feel free to ask anytime.\u201d That moment encouraged me to start actively using the Question Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also made good friends at the university, and we study together every week in the library\u2019s group study space, discussing mathematics and physics problems. Even when the problems are difficult, overcoming them together is truly enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am especially moved by the passion our professors have for teaching. In a lecture on mathematical proofs, a professor said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMathematics is like mountain climbing. Even if the first person to climb cannot reach the summit, the marks they leave become guideposts for those who follow. No matter how difficult the problem, people will continue to take on the challenge, and one day it will be solved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt that mathematicians are wonderfully romantic people, and these words deeply touched my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future Goals<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was in junior high school, I read The Perfect Proof and became interested in the mathematician Grigori Perelman, who proved the Poincar\u00e9 Conjecture. I want to understand and appreciate the mathematical world that Perelman enjoyed, and my current goal is to understand the proof of the Poincar\u00e9 Conjecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After achieving this goal, I hope to pursue truth just as scientists do, and become a researcher in natural language processing within artificial intelligence. These games extend far beyond simple entertainment\u2014the strategies developed within them can be applied to solving real-world problems. For example, strategies used in pursuit-evasion games can be utilized for path-planning in dynamic environments. I am analyzing competitive games, including pursuit-evasion games, using AI, with the aim of further improving their strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My three and a half years at university have been extremely fulfilling. In addition to what I have learned in classes, I have gained valuable multicultural experiences through interactions with Japanese friends and other international students. I have also had many opportunities to encounter Japan\u2019s traditional and regional cultures, and the festivals I participated in here in Akita Prefecture remain deeply memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying abroad in Japan has been a special and irreplaceable experience for me. By directly experiencing Japanese culture and society\u2014not only through academic study but through daily life\u2014I have greatly broadened my perspective. These subjects require redefining and deepening the concepts we learned previously. In analysis, for instance, limits and continuity are rigorously defined using the \u03b5\u2013\u03b4 method, clarifying many concepts that were previously ambiguous. This is a very challenging topic, but my goal is to detect defects at an early stage using ultrasonic measurement techniques and help prevent accidents. In my research, I am also exploring the use of artificial intelligence methods to improve detection accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have enjoyed a very fulfilling university life by participating in activities such as the \u201cJapanese Speech Contest for Foreign Residents\u201d and joining projects that address social issues together with Japanese friends. Akita University welcomes many international students from different countries, creating an environment where we can learn about each other\u2019s cultures. I believe this cultural exchange is one of the university\u2019s greatest strengths. In the programming practicum, we use the C language to simulate electronic and electrical circuits and analyze data. However, conventional silicon-based semiconductors are reaching their performance limits, and the development of new materials is necessary to realize next-generation, high-performance devices. I am focusing on next-generation semiconductor materials such as nitrides and oxides, with the goal of developing highly efficient light-emitting devices (LEDs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, I use a molecular beam epitaxy system to fabricate GaN-based LEDs in the form of nanocolumn crystals grown on polycrystalline silicon substrates\u2014materials widely used in low-cost solar cells. I evaluate both the emission characteristics and the I-V characteristics of the devices. Gallium nitride offers high heat resistance and the potential for highly efficient light emission. However, growing high-quality gallium nitride crystals is extremely challenging, and optimizing the numerous parameters across the different layers of the fabricated diode is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By repeating experiments and refining the growth process, I aim to produce higher-quality crystals and achieve more efficient device operation. In such cases, the group is often naturally divided into Japanese group and foreign group. However, there are no foreign faculty members and staff members in my group, so there is no barrier between Japanese students and foreign students, and we conduct research as one team, despite being multinational. Mr. R published three scientific journals during the three years (in the PhD program), completed his PhD program in March 2024, and stayed in my research group as a postdoctoral researcher for seven months, before leaving for a postdoctoral position at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba. Ms. Swati has been in my research group for about a year, and she will soon be participating in an international conference in the United States (the most prestigious conference in my field of research) to present her research. After six months of research training in my group (international internship), Ms. A and Ms. Y left for a European university to enroll in the PhD program. Ms. K who completed her graduation project research and graduated from Akita University (my group) in March 2024, left for Sendai to enroll in the master&#8217;s program at the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University. Many different types of thin films are used inside semiconductor chips, each serving different functions such as insulation, conductivity, or anti-reflection. In addition to the circuits that most people imagine when thinking about semiconductors, thin-film solar cells are another important application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydrogenated amorphous silicon is a material with great potential. Its unique properties may enable flexible, lightweight, and low-cost thin-film solar cells. Furthermore, because it exhibits a wide optical bandgap and excellent electrical characteristics, it is considered highly promising for use in a wide range of electronic devices such as thin-film transistor liquid crystal displays and image sensors. I am currently working to fabricate molecular solid thin films of this material and explore the emergence of new, previously unreported functionalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout my studies, I have learned extensively about the materials field\u2014from atoms and molecules and their structures, to metals, ceramics, electronic devices, recording media, and even processing technologies. I have devoted significant time and effort to understanding lectures and deeply considering how experimental tasks relate to theoretical knowledge. The knowledge I have gained has become firmly established, allowing me to enjoy a fulfilling research life. I truly feel that my university experience at Akita University has been extremely meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, building on the knowledge I have acquired, I hope to contribute to society
